MENDOCINO CO., 8/25/25 – Mendocino for Palestine, a nonprofit advocacy group, will hold a free screening of “The Encampments” on Friday at the Valerie event space in Mendocino. The film documents Palestinian advocacy encampments at Columbia University and includes interviews with organizers and professors who took part in the demonstration.
According to a recent Mendocino for Palestine social media post, “The Encampments” shares insightful stories of the Columbia University protests “with raw, emotional footage and in-depth interviews with whistleblowers, professors, and the central organizers.”
Cal Winslow, a volunteer with Mendocino for Palestine and one of the event’s organizers, said in an interview that the group aims to advocate for Palestinian freedom and independence from Israel. He said “The Encampments” is an educational documentary that shows how university students can make a significant impact on a large institution.
“This film gives you an in-depth account of who these students were, and what they were trying to say. They were nonviolent and attempting to educate the fact that Columbia University was tied in with the government and big business,” Winslow explained. “People from all over say they are inspired by American students.”
Although news coverage of the devastation in Gaza has declined in recent months, Winslow said he has still noticed strong support for Palestinian independence. He said it is crucial for Mendocino for Palestine to continue organizing events that raise awareness about the continued destruction in Gaza.
“I think that support for Palestinians has even grown, even though protesting on college campuses has been made nearly impossible,” he emphasized.
“The Encampments” will be screened this Friday at the Valerie event space at 10546 Lansing St. in Mendocino at 7 p.m. There will be refreshments available and a post-screening discussion.
